Hello everyone,

My name is Alejandro (Alex). I am a junior majoring in Anthropology. I would like to focus my study on the biological aspect of Anthropology and find it interesting to know how evolution can impact medicine and the health of others. Like Gary I also took Anth 360 last semester and found it fascinating. I would like to expand my knowledge within the topic and feel it would be beneficial for my future career in the Medical field.

The blog title “Are we causing antibiotic resistance by trying to prevent it?” caught my attention because it is something that should be a concern in today’s population. I have definitely noticed a trend of Americans not following the label of their prescribed medication. Last semester I conducted a survey that ranged in ages of 18-64 that asked weather or not they followed the dosage and finished the prescribed medication. To my surprise 3 out of 10 had followed their directed instructions. When compared in class the majority of results showed there were less people following the label and they knowingly knew it was bad not to finish their medication.  So when it comes down to the question of are we causing antibiotic resistance it may as well be yes in my eye’s. We usually use medication and stop the instance we feel better, not knowing that the bacteria is still alive in our body. That is a bad move on our part because it introduces the bacteria to the medication and replicated with resistance to the drug in most cases.  This is an issue we must address and stop the misuse of drugs that should be used to treat the bacteria and is a relevant topic to evolutionary medicine in the context of antibiotic resistance bacteria.
